The NHL decided to not punish Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke for his hit on Boston's Marc Savard.

NHL general managers have developed the framework for a new rule punishing hits to the head. The league's 30 GMs wrapped up three days of meetings with a new rule that allows referees to assess a minor or major penalty for blindside hits that target the head.

The Atlanta Thrashers have a newcomer: 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, an 11-time All-Star. Chelios has played in the most games of any American-born NHL player, and he joins the Thrashers after getting five goals and 17 assists in 46 games with Chicago of the AHL. The team recalled Chelios on Wednesday.

Chris Kelly had a goal and an assist, and Matt Cullen, Milan Michalek and Mike Fisher also scored for the Ottawa Senators, who snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. The Senators scored three times in the third period, matching their total during their post-Olympics skid.

Jannik Hansen scored the decisive goal with 2:08 remaining, Mikael Samuelsson had his first NHL hat trick, and the Vancouver Canucks rallied to beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-4 on Tuesday night. Hansen snapped the tie with an unusual goal that was confirmed by video replay. Aaron Rome took a shot from the point that bounced off the end boards.

Cory Stillman scored the winning shootout goal and the Florida Panthers held the Minnesota Wild to a franchise-tying low 11 shots in a 3-2 win on Tuesday night. The Wild also tied a season low for shots by a home team in the NHL this season. Minnesota managed only 11 shots on Jan. 23, 2004, at Anaheim.

Eric Fehr and Jason Chimera will sit as healthy scratches for Washington on Wednesday night.

The Capitals have a plethora of forwards and coach Bruce Boudreau has been rotating them in and out, while looking for the best fits heading into the post-season.

Justin Williams is reportedly close to returning to the Los Angeles lineup from a broken leg.

He has been sidelined since Dec. 26, but could be back as early as Friday's game against Dallas. Coach Terry Murray said he would talk with Williams after practice on Thursday before making a final decision on his status. We will keep you posted.

Raitis Ivanans will be inserted into the Kings' lineup on Wednesday.

He will play on the fourth line with Jeff Halpern and Rich Clune in place of Scott Parse. Coach Terry Murray is expecting a physical game from the Blackhawks. Ivanans has accounted for 117 penalty minutes in 55 games this season.

Ryan Callahan will start Wednesday's game on the Rangers' top power-play unit.

He will join Artem Anisimov and Brandon Dubinsky up front, while Michael Del Zotto and Olli Jokinen will man the points. This five-man group scored the team's power-play goal in Sunday's 2-1 overtime loss to Buffalo, so coach John Tortorella is giving them another chance together.

Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond (undisclosed) has been off the team's IR since Saturday, but he will finally get back into the New Jersey lineup on Wednesday night.

He has not played since Feb. 10 against the Flyers. Defenseman Mark Fraser and center Rod Pelley will also dress against the Rangers on Wednesday, while Jay Pandolfo, Vladimir Zharkov, Andrew Peters and Anssi Salmela will serve as healthy scratches.

Paul Martin (forearm) could be back in the Devils' lineup by March 20 against the Blues.

"Right now I think, from seeing the doctor (last) Friday, if I had to say how long, I would say for sure another week from this weekend, being realistic," he said. Martin's grip strength in his left hand is currently around 75 percent of his right hand and the target strength to where he can be cleared is at 80 to 85.

Jaime Sifers has been called up by the Wild.

The team lost defensemen Shane Hnidy (leg) and Brent Burns (hip) to injury in Tuesday's loss to the Panthers. However, they haven't been totally ruled out of playing on Thursday against Detroit. If they cannot play then Sifers and John Scott will dress in their place.

Derek Boogaard is eligible to return to the Minnesota lineup on Thursday night versus the Red Wings.

He was suspended for two games for a knee-on-knee hit with Edmonton's Ryan Jones last Friday.

Petr Kalus has been returned to the minors by Minnesota.

He logged 6:41 of ice time in his Wild debut on Tuesday night against the Panthers, but with Derek Boogaard ready to return from his concussion he was demoted.

Darcy Tucker was back at Colorado practice on Wednesday.

He joined Stephane Yelle and Marek Svatos on the fourth line, bumping Chris Durno out of the team's potential starting lineup for Thursday night against Florida. Tucker missed Tuesday's game due to illness, but it looks as though he will return. Stay tuned.
