The Atlanta Thrashers have a month to preview their possible future without star forward Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk, the Thrashers' captain and one of the league's top scorers, is expected to miss three to five weeks with a broken bone in his right foot.

He says Demers' ability to play an up-tempo style makes him an important part of the team. Demers was voted the top rookie on the Sharks last season. He finished with four goals and 17 assists in 51 games.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Greene will be out for about three months after having surgery on his left shoulder. Kings spokesman Mike Kalinowski said Thursday that Greene recently had surgery to fix several minor problems in his shoulder. Greene's recovery likely will keep him out of uniform through the start of the regular season Oct.

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman expects to learn on Saturday whether his salary cap-squeezed team will be able to keep restricted free agent goaltender Antti Niemi of Finland. After Bowman and Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, were unable to reach contract terms for the 26-year-old, the case advanced to an arbitration hearing Thursday in Toronto.

The Senators have signed forward Peter Regin to a two-year contract. Ottawa announced the deal on Thursday. Regin had 13 goals, 16 assists, and 20 penalty minutes in 75 games with the Senators last season. He added three goals in six playoff games. The Senators selected Regin with the 87th overall pick of the 2004 draft.

The Atlanta Thrashers have avoided arbitration with restricted free-agent Andrew Ladd by signing him to a one-year, $2.35 million deal. The 24-year-old forward had 17 goals and 21 assists with the Chicago Blackhawks last season before he was traded to Atlanta on July 1 for defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a second-round pick in 2011.

The Thrashers and recently acquired forward Ben Eager have agreed to terms on new deal, avoiding arbitration. Terms of the contract weren't announced Wednesday night. The 26-year-old restricted free agent played in 60 games last season with the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. The Washington Capitals have acquired enforcer D.J. King from the St. Louis Blues for prospect Stefan Della Rovere. The deal was announced Wednesday. King, a left winger, has spent four seasons with the Blues but has played in only 13 games over the last two seasons because of injuries. He dislocated his shoulder in the 2008-09 opener, and managed only 12 games last season due to a broken finger.

The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Cam Fowler to a three-year contract, likely putting the first-round draft pick on a fast track to the NHL. The Ducks announced the deal Wednesday. Anaheim drafted Fowler with the 12th overall selection last month after the projected top-five pick unexpectedly fell several spots.

The Senators are bringing in Rick Wamsley as goaltending coach. Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray made the announcement Wednesday. Wamsley spent the past four seasons with the St. Louis Blues. In 43 games as interim head coach of the Blues' Peoria AHL team, Wamsley went 17-20-6 with the Rivermen. Defenseman Mark Fraser has agreed to a one-year, $500,000 contract with the New Jersey Devils. The deal will allow the sides to avoid a salary arbitration hearing set for later this week. Fraser played in 61 games last season, his first full season in the NHL. The 23-year-old had three goals and three assists.

The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed Peter Mannino to a multi-year deal.

Atlanta declined to disclose the terms of the deal, but Mannino is expected to start the season in the minors. Mannino is 26 years old and has only played in three NHL games.

Matt Greene is out for about three months after undergoing shoulder surgery.

That means Greene won't be available until late October or early November. Greene had nine points and 83 penalty minutes in 75 games last season.

Peter Regin has signed a two-year/$2 million deal with the Ottawa Senators.

Regin will make $950,000 next season and $1.05 million in 2011-12. Regin scored 13 goals and registered 16 assists in 75 games last season. He also netted three goals and four points in six playoff contests.

An arbitrator has awarded Tim Kennedy a one-year/$1 million contract.

Teams typically have the option to either accept an arbitrator awarded contract or allow the player to become an unrestricted free agent, but all contracts under $1,611,180 are automatically accepted this summer. However, the Sabres would have almost certainly agreed to Kennedy's deal anyways. Kennedy scored 10 goals and 26 points in 78 games last season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Michael Vernace to a one-year, two-way contract.

Vernace had two goals and 13 points in 62 AHL games last season between the Chicago Wolves and Hamilton Bulldogs. He isn't expected to have any fantasy value this season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Mathieu Roy to a one-year, two-way contract.

Roy registered 10 assists in 31 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets this season before being placed on waivers. The Florida Panthers claimed him but he didn't end up playing for them. Roy is a depth defenseman who will probably spend most of the season in the minors.

Vladmir Mihalik has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Mihalik had 18 points and 67 penalty minutes in 75 AHL games last season. Mihalik has an outside chance of making the Lightning's opening day roster.

Andrew Ladd has inked a one-year/$2.35 million deal with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Ladd had filed for salary arbitration after earning $1.65 million last season. Ladd scored 17 goals and 38 points in 82 games in 2009-10.

Ben Eager has agreed to a one-year/$965,000 contract extension with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Atlanta acquired Eager from Chicago as part of the Dustin Byfuglien trade. Eager is projected to serve on Atlanta's fourth line.

The Ottawa Senators haven't named a number one goaltender going into training camp.

That's probably good news for Pascal Leclaire, who lost the starting job late in the season, although he did regain it briefly before Ottawa's first round exit. Between freak injuries and on-ice struggles, 2009-10 was a season Leclaire will be eager to forget. The Senators have since hired Rick Wamsley, who has a long history with Leclaire, to serve as the team's new goaltending coach. Ottawa hopes that the addition of Wamsley combined with the fact that this is a contract season for Leclaire, will help him bounce back this season. Look for Leclaire and Brian Elliott to split time pretty evenly until one of them manages to set himself apart.
